This is one of my favourite lazy meals when I’m on a calorie deficit. It takes just 5 minutes to make, is packed with protein, and keeps me feeling full with barely any cooking. I especially love this combo when I’m close to my period!
- Tofu: I simply microwave the silken tofu for 1 minute 30 seconds to warm it up. It’s such a great source of plant-based protein and makes the perfect base for this meal.
- Chicken: I used shredded chicken breast because it pairs really well with the tofu and keeps you full for longer. Of course, you can use whatever protein you prefer, but chicken breast is one of the leanest options. Other great choices are boiled squid, boiled prawns, or thinly sliced steamed beef.
- Perilla oil: I absolutely love the combination of perilla oil and soy sauce. It makes such a simple dish taste so good! If you’ve never tried perilla oil before, it’s made from perilla seeds and has a richer, nuttier flavour with a stronger aroma than sesame oil. You might not love it the first time you try it, but it grew on me so quickly, and now I’m obsessed.
If I had to compare them, I’d say sesame oil is like the violin, while perilla oil is like the double bass. They both add richness, but perilla oil has a much deeper, fuller flavour. (Hopefully that comparison makes sense! 😂)
It’s also rich in omega-3 fatty acids, which is one of the reasons many health-conscious people choose it over sesame oil.
I highly recommend topping this dish with chopped spring onions. They add freshness and help balance the richness of the perilla oil perfectly.
I also made a vegetarian version of this dish using natto instead of chicken, so be sure to check out that recipe too! (https://banhminseo.com/high-protein-5-minutes-natto-tofu-snack-vegetarian/)

Notes
- I personally love using perilla oil here because it has a richer, deeper flavour than sesame oil. But if you don’t have it, sesame oil works just as well!
- I used Evergreen silken tofu, but feel free to use any brand of silken tofu you like!
